Meet Tom Paris

Also known as Eugene Thomas Paris, Tom Paris is both the chief helmsman and the auxiliary medic of the USS Voyager. The Eugene in Tom Paris's name is a nod to Gene Roddenberry, who created Star Trek. Tom Paris is played by Robert Duncan McNeill.

Starfleet service is in Tom Paris's blood. His father is Admiral Owen Paris and many of his family members also served in the Starfleet. During the 2350s, Tom Paris attended Starfleet Academy. His major was astrophysics. Tom Paris was noticed because of his ability as a pilot. This led to a post with the Starfleet Academy's honor squadron.

However, tragedy struck soon after Tom Paris graduated from Starfleet Academy. He crashed a shuttle that hw was piloting near Caldik Prime. This led to the death of three fellow Starfleet officers. Paris feared that he would lose his commission, so he tampered records that would eventually finger him as the culprit.

Haunted by his actions, a guilty Paris later confessed. This led to a court-martial and a dishonorable discharge from Starfleet. It also put a great strain between Paris and his father. After his discharge, Paris quit San Francisco to go to Marseille. He whiled away his time playing pool and drinking at Sandrine's, which could be found on the waterfront. This is where he was recruited to join the Maquis Rebellion.
