Lost in Space

Kathryn Janeway was the first female commander who was the central character in a Star Trek TV Series (Star Trek Voyager). She was also the first Federation captain to successfully explore the Delta Quadrant. This was entirely by accident, as the original mission was to track the whereabouts of a ship that had been reported lost in the Badlands.

While there, the Voyager was overtaken by a displacement wave, which threw the ship seventy thousand light years away into the far side of the galaxy, the Delta Quadrant. Many of the crew died or were severely injured in the violent move to the Quadrant. It was eventually discovered that the missing ship, named the Val Jean, was also in the Quadrant, and that an alien was responsible for the transfer of both the Val Jean and the Voyager to the Delta Quadrant.

Some crew members also went missing, and had to be recovered from a hostile planet. Due to the decimation in ranks, the crew of the Val Jean and the Voyager both merged in order to cooperate and hopefully find a way to return to Federation space. Although they would not be able to find their way home for 7 years, the combined crew was able to discover many new planets and civilizations. However, all this came at a personal cost to Janeway, as her former fianc had given her up for dead in the years that the Voyager was lost in the Quadrant and had married another woman.
