Get Onboard the USS Diligent

Officially called the NX-87651, the USS Diligent was made in 2387 at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards' Experimental prototype construction facility. The construction of the USS Diligent came on the heels of the twentieth anniversary of the U.S.S. Defiant's commission date.

While it was still being built, the USS Diligent was known as "The Tank". It was made to supplement the Defiant-class ships as one of the main defense ships of the Federation. By this time, the Defiant-class ships were showing their age. As a defense ship, there is little room for science labs or creature comforts aboard the USS Diligent. Instead, most of the internal volume was devoted to weapons, power and shield systems. A new form of Ablative Hull Armor was used to line the USS Diligent's hull. This is an experimental model that can take even more damage that the armor of Prometheus-class ships before it fails. It means that the USS Diligent outlast other ships and can stay in combat when it shields fail. The USS Diligent was accompanied by the USS Horizon on its first shakedown cruise. This was at the request of Captain Tom Bryce, the USS Diligent's commanding officer.

The USS Diligent was then assigned to the Deep Space 9 Station. It took over most of the USS Defiant's duties. The USS Diligent was better suited to Deep Space 9 than the USS Defiant.
