The Famous Jean Luc Picard

Jean Luc Picard is one of the most famous captains from the fictional television series Star Trek. Played by the actor Patric Stewart, Captain Jean Luc Picard first appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Captain Jean Luc Picard would later go on to appear in the feature films Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek Nemesis. Captain Jean Luc Picard was even shown in the very first episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

The intrepid captain is named after one or both of the twin brothers Auguste Piccard and Jean Felix Piccard, who were Swiss scientists during the 20th century.

Amazingly, Patrick Stewart was not the first choice to play Captain Jean Luc Picard. Despite Stewart's credentials from the Royal Shakespeare company, he was only initially in the running for the role of Data. However, Stewart said that he did not want to play a supporting character that sat around most of the time.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had envisioned Captain Jean Luc Picard as someone who was virile, masculine, and was endowed with hair. The bald Stewart definitely did not fit this description. But after weeks of discussion with the casting director, as well as Robert H. Justman and Rick Berman, Roddenberry finally agreed to cast Stewart as Captain Jean Luc Picard. Millions of Star Trek fans will be forever grateful.
