Get to Know the Doctor A veteran of many television series, one of Robert Picardo’s most well-known roles is that of the Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH), also known as The Doctor, on Star Trek: Voyager. Robert Picardo was born on October 27, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Joe Picardo, an American from Italian descent. Both of Robert Picardo’s parents have roots in Italy. His dad’s family came from Montecorvino Rovella, Salerno, while his maternal grandparents came from Bomba in Abruzzo. Robert Picardo graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1971. He went to Yale and embarked on a pre-medical course. But he was soon drawn to acting. While at Yale, Robert Picardo joined the Society of Orpheus & Bacchus, an undergraduate a cappella singing group. He has also appeared in two Broadway plays, Gemini in 1977, and Tribute in 1978. It was in 1995 that Robert Picardo began to play Emergency Medical Hologram and Emergency Command Hologram on Star Trek: Voyager. Picardo reprised the role of Emergency Command Hologram in the 1996 Star Trek movie Star Trek: First Contact as well as in the 1997 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Doctor Bashir I Presume?”. After the Voyager;s Chief Medical Officer and his Vulcan backup were killed, the Emergency Medical Hologram, Joe Picardo’s character, began to be used extensively. The Emergency Medical Hologram soon grew to have a distinct personality, complete with a cutting wit.
