The Klingons are warriors who constantly struggle to achieve honor and glory. This is why they manufacture several types of starships. But unlike the Starfleet, which also makes exploration and research vessels, the Klingon utilize warships almost all the time.

The Klingon D7 Battlecruiser is the first Klingon ship design that was revealed in The Original Series. The Klingon D7 Battlecruiser was desiged by Matt Jefferies to mimic the shape of a manta ray. This gave it a menacing air and ensured that viewers would immediately recognize it. Matt Jefferies designed a rounded forward hull that was connected by a long boom to a main hull that was shaped like a wing. There were engine nacelles mounted on each wingtip. A lot of Klingon warships have since appeared on Star Trek, but the design has mostly followed this style. A majority of the Klingon warships were built as scale models. It was only later that computer-generated imagery was used to come up with the ship models. Most of the original studio models have now been sold at auctions.

The engines of Klingon ships are usually a kind of sublight engline. Almost all of the Klingon ships also have a warp drive, which is one type of superluminal propulsion technology. As befits a warrior race, Klingon ships come with heavy weapons. They are fitted with particle beam weapons known as disrupters and photon torpedoes. Photon torpedoes are an antimatter weapon that the Klingons use for their primary offense. Later Klingon ships were equipped with cloaking devices.

The Klingon ships during Star Trek The Next Generation and Star Trek Deep Space Nine were designed by Rick Sternbach. He modelled the ships to look like the result of a technology exchange among the Klingons and Starfleet, who by this time had formed an alliance. In the Enterprise television series, Klingon ships appear to be more primitive than the ships found in later series. The inside of Klingon ships are very useful. The interiors are meant to evoke an old submarine. The prefix IKS usually appears before Klingon ship name. IKS is an abbreviation for Imperial Klingon Starship.

The original model for the Klingon D7 Battlecruiser can now be found in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum. The Klingon D7 Battlecruiser was joined by the original studio model for the USS Enterprise. The Klingon D7 Battlecruisers was first supposed to appear in the Star Trek episode Elaan of Troyius. But the episodes were not shown in their production order, so the Klingon D7 Battlecruisers was first seen by viewers in the Star Trek episode The Enterprise Incident. The Klingon D7 Battlecruiser has a number of disruptor banks that fired in pulses. It also had a torpedo launcher in its forward module. In another episode of Star Trek’s The Animated Series entitled More Tribbles More Troubles, the Klingon D7 Battlecruiser has now been endowed with an experimental stasis weapon. This weapon can incapacitate target vessels. This version of the Klingon D7 Battlecruiser also has both impulse engines and warp drive. It can now travel faster than light.
