The Talented Ms. Hoshi

There are many aliens in the Star Trek universe. But Hoshi Sato is a notable exception. She is a human linguist who was stationed on the the United Earth starship Enterprise while it explored the galaxy. Sato started with the ship in 2151 as its communications officer. During the next decade, she would create the linguacode universal linguistics matrix.

Hoshi Sato was born in Kyoto, Japan on July 9, 2129. She is the second of three children. It was apparent from an early age that Hoshi Sato was gifted. Most of her childhood years were spent under the tutelage of private tutors. This enabled her to learn a variety of languages. Unfortunately, her studies prevented her from making close connections with others.

It was not usual for Hoshi Sato to spend the whole day alone. She continually felt isolated, even when she already reached adulthood. She could be surrounded by people and still feel alone. It was her loneliness that prompted her to study language. Hoshi Sato believed that language could enable her to bridge the gap between other people and cultures.

Hoshi Sato was nor close to a lot of people, but her grandfather, Michio Sato, was especially dear to her. Hoshi Sato also holds a black belt in Aikido.
