The General Chang of Klingon Empire

General Chang is a Klingon species who served as Chief of staff to Chancellor Gorkon. His affiliation is with the Klingon Empire. His character was portrayed by Christopher Plumber. He was Chancellor of the Klingon High Council in 2293 where he got involved in a conspiracy to sabotage peace talks between the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets. The Klingon general was very fond of Shakespeare and often quoted lines from the poet. This is influenced by Chancellor Gorkon’s belief that one has to enjoy ‘Hamlet’ in the original Klingon.

General Chang used a Klingon Bird-of-Prey ship in his aim to frame Captain James T. Kirk for the assassination of Chancellor Gorkon. The ship has the ability to fire its weapons under cloak. Chang used this to fire against Kronos One while it is being escorted by the USS Enterprise to make it seem like the latter ship was the one who made the shot which is a clear violation of the truce. The attack led to the co-conspirators from the Enterprise to board Kronos One and assassinate Gorkon. Chang ordered his troops to arrest Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy when they boarded Kronos One in a mission to assist in stopping the conflict; instead they were charged as the assassins of Gorkon under the Interstellar Law.

During the trial, Chang forced Kirk to admit that he is responsible for the conduct of crew and therefore is also responsible for the attack against Kronos One. However, the judge sentenced the pair to be sent to Rura Penthe instead of being killed. Again, Chang used his wits to make sure that pair would be eliminated by arranging for it to look like the pair had tried to escape that s why they had been killed.

The pair was rescued by the Enterprise and Chang’s ship was destroyed with him. His last words were Shakespeare’s “to be, or not to be.”
