The Star Trek canon recognizes Captain Christopher Pike as the first captain of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701. But according to the animated Star Trek series, the first captain of the USS Enterprise was actually Captain Robert April. This fact is supported by printed Star Trek fiction and reference books. Captain Christopher Pike was promoted to fleet captain before "The Menagerie" was aired. Pike suffers severe injuries while rescuing a number of space cadets.
